"Stigma" è senza dubbio uno dei libri più letti tra i lavori di Goffman e, con "Asylum", certamente il più "critico". Il saggio descrive e analizza le pratiche di stigmatizzazione e gli usi sociali della diversità combinando tre direttrici dell'identità, personale, sociale e soggettivamente sentita, con i tre principali tipi di stigma: fisici, del carattere e della differenza culturale e religiosa. La gestione dello stigma è presente in qualunque società, ovunque entrino in gioco delle regole morali per la definizione delle identità. Ma quali sono le modalità concrete che sottopongono alcuni individui a quei giudizi morali che chiamano in causa l'appartenenza a una "categoria inferiore" dell'umanità? E quali sono le strategie di sopravvivenza, di difesa o di adattamento delle persone stigmatizzate? Qual è infine lo scarto tra l'identità sociale e l'identità personale e, in definitiva, tra la "normalità" e la "devianza"? In questo libro, sulla base di un'accurata analisi etnografica ricca di esempi e di racconti di vita, Goffman fornisce delle risposte specifiche a queste domande e stimola una riflessione più ampia sulle politiche dell'identità (e della differenza) che oggi sembrano caratterizzare sempre più fortemente le nostre società, attivando vecchi e nuovi processi di stigmatizzazione/esclusione.

This is written in an unnecessarily pedantic and obscure (read: Academic English at it worst) style. While the subject is fascinating, the author took great pains to present it in a horrifically dry and unpalatable way.

This book was terribly boring, but it had this one great example in it about how people treat someone when they just find out about their stigma. They made up an example of someone having a quiggle. Received this one as a gift from a sociologist friend. Perhaps it was just me, but the greatest insights that this text offers remain at its margins, rather than being central to the expression of the text. Said otherwise, I came away with stimulated thoughts, but more so in departing from the text
