Per parlare di sessualità Foucault ha ricostruito i percorsi del "soggetto desiderante", risalendo dall'epoca moderna fino all'antichità classica ("L'uso dei piaceri") e procedendo poi ai primi due secoli della nostra era nel mondo greco-romano ("La cura di sé"). In questo periodo storico, forse per la prima volta si affermano preoccupazioni e valori individualistici, un'attenzione nuova al privato, una moralità personale autonoma, ormai sganciata dalla sfera pubblica e non ancora inserita in una visione totalizzante del divino e della relazione dell'uomo a esso. Questo libro attraversa con intelligenza e originalità i documenti di un'epoca eccezionalmente fertile: dalla trattazione dei sogni a sfondo sessuale di Artemidoro, ai trattati di medicina di Galeno, alla meditazione di Epitteto, Marco Aurelio, Seneca. "La cura di sé" è il terzo volume di quella "Storia della sessualità" di cui Michel Foucault aveva esposto ne "La volontà di sapere" il progetto iniziale: comprendere come, nelle società occidentali moderne, si sia costituito qualcosa di simile a una "esperienza della sessualità", una nozione ormai a noi familiare e che tuttavia è apparsa solamente all'inizio del diciannovesimo secolo.
