Harada Hideo è un uomo di mezz’età, divorziato, con un figlio che non vede quasi mai e un lavoro – scrivere sceneggiature per la televisione – che stenta a decollare. Per di più, vive nel suo ufficio, in una grande e asettica palazzina nei pressi di una trafficata strada statale di Tokyo. Così, per sfuggire allo squallore e alla solitudine della propria esistenza, il giorno del suo compleanno Hideo decide di recarsi ad Asakusa, il quartiere della sua infanzia, dove a dodici anni aveva perduto entrambi i genitori, investiti da un’auto. Ma, quando entra in un teatro, tra il pubblico nota un individuo straordinariamente somigliante al padre. L’uomo lo invita a seguirlo a casa sua, dove lo aspetta la moglie: anche lei è identica alla madre morta… Hideo trascorre con i due una serata sconcertante e meravigliosa, e questo gli dà la forza di riprendere a lavorare con rinnovata energia. Gli incontri si susseguono, e sono una fonte di gioia e serenità, eppure… Hideo appare agli occhi dei suoi amici sempre più pallido e smunto, come se un male oscuro lo stesse consumando. La più angosciata di tutti è Kei – una vicina di casa con la quale Hideo ha intrecciato una relazione sentimentale –, che, una volta scoperto il suo segreto, gli consiglia di interrompere quelle visite, perché è evidente che lo stanno distruggendo. Ma anche Kei nasconde una verità inquietante…

One of those weird Japanese novels that you don't read for the minimalist prose. Instead, you read it for the magical essence that comes out of very imaginative situations. Interesting is possibly the only word I have to describe this book. It took me some time afterward to understand what I’d read. This is a haunting (feels like a pun of the story) and sad book. Very brief, this reads quickly & it is easy to read as well. If, like myself, you are a fan of Japanese ghost stories, you're going to see the end coming on this one right away so that kind of spoiled it for me, because this story is very much in line with the old traditional type of ghostly tale fr Leggi tutto

I'd never have heard of this book if not for the recent film All of Us Strangers (which is terrific, by the way). Its screenplay is loosely based on this story, with some significant changes. I read this in preparation for the movie All of Us Strangers and they could not be less related. This was quite good but not really my cup of tea. I think I am not the intended audience.
Update, 4/2025: So I FINALLY was able to see the film version, over a year after reading the book, and as I suspected, I responded MUCH more positively to that than the book from which it stemmed.
