I due racconti autobiografici Un ricordo di Natale (1956) e Un Natale (1982) racchiudono l’atmosfera incantata del giorno più atteso e amato dell’anno, vissuto attraverso lo sguardo del piccolo Buddy: la gita nel bosco alla ricerca di un albero da addobbare, l’infornata di trenta focacce segretamente insaporite con qualche goccia di whisky, lo scambio dei doni – alcuni meno graditi («camicie e maglioni», come da tradizione) e altri molto amati, come un grande, bellissimo aeroplano colorato. Il ricordo ormai lontano delle feste trascorse dall’autore in compagnia di una vecchia cugina e del padre, perduto e ritrovato, rivive così in queste pagine toccanti, capaci di evocare il profumo magico e familiare dell’infanzia.
