Nel corso della guerra di Secessione americana cinque nordisti, prigionieri delle truppe separatiste, fuggono su una mongolfiera e vengono alla fine gettati su un'isola sperduta del Pacifico. Novelli Robinson Crusoe, gli uomini riescono a sottomettere la natura che li circonda e trasformano la nuova patria in una colonia, ripercorrendo simbolicamente l'intero cammino della civiltà e le varie tappe dello sviluppo tecnologico, dalla conquista del fuoco all'invenzione del telegrafo elettrico. Ma fin dai primi momenti del loro arrivo, accadono cose strane e inesplicabili. Una presenza invisibile aleggia intorno ai naufraghi, un'influenza benefica ma non per questo meno inquietante. Chi è il «genio dell'isola», dotato di poteri quasi sovrannaturali, che spia e aiuta i coloni restando nascosto nell'ombra? E perché lo fa? Cosa vuole da loro? Alla fine il disordine sarà riparato e i naufraghi riusciranno a scoprire il segreto, ma non per merito loro. Il mistero mina alle fondamenta il processo di appropriazione dell'isola che i coloni hanno avviato, la loro razionalità scientifica viene messa in crisi dall'irruzione nella scena dell'irrazionale e del sovrannaturale, ciò che sembrava essere celebrazione della scienza e del progresso diventa denuncia dei limiti invalicabili della ragione.
