Sarebbe riduttivo considerare I miserabili, forse il libro più popolare di tutta la letteratura europea dell’Ottocento, semplicemente la storia della redenzione di un ex galeotto e della sua fuga dai gendarmi. Il capolavoro di Hugo è piuttosto il romanzo di una città, la Parigi capitale di una civiltà borghese che non ha ancora cominciato a dubitare del proprio destino di progresso. Ma è anche una sorta di epopea sociale della miseria, il romanzo della plebaglia, dei bassifondi e delle fogne di una Parigi notturna nella quale un sottoproletariato miserabile affronta un faticoso cammino verso il riscatto morale. Questo romanzo corale è il ritratto vibrante di una società in fermento, il grande affresco storico della Francia del secolo XIX e la celebrazione commossa della sua gente che, pur schiacciata dalla miseria e oppressa dall’ingiustizia, non dimentica e non rinuncia alla propria umanità.
