In una fredda sera d'autunno una donna viene trovata impiccata nella sua villetta estiva a Pingvellir. Tutto sembra confermare l'unica ipotesi plausibile: suicidio. Ma quando Erlendur Sveinsson, detective della polizia di Reykjavík, viene in possesso della registrazione di una seduta spiritica alla quale la donna aveva partecipato poco prima di morire, prova il bisogno irrefrenabile di conoscere la sua storia. Emergono così, a poco a poco, i retroscena del suo gesto: l'annegamento del padre, avvenuto molti anni prima in circostanze poco chiare, fa da sfondo a oscuri presagi di morte e all'ossessione della donna per l'aldilà e per certe strane "presenze".
Nel frattempo, Erlendur riprende in mano alcuni vecchi casi di persone scomparse senza lasciare traccia. Un pensiero fisso percorre silenzioso le sue indagini: la nostalgia straziante per qualcuno che si è perso chissà dove e non è più tornato a casa.

Here he spends 98% of Hypothermia nosing about a case of suicide when even he was convinced that it wasn't murder. There's a subtle elegance to this particular story, considering it's a novel of crime fiction. There are no raging maniacs with axes hanging about, no serial killers, and no serious threats to the people of Reykjavik.
