La traduzione di "Beowulf", un poema epico tra i più noti della tradizione anglosassone, è stata uno dei primi lavori effettuati da Tolkien, e una delle fonti originarie della sua intera produzione letteraria. Traducendo in prosa il celebre ciclo poetico, Tolkien ci pone di fronte a un giovane eroe dalla forza sovraumana che affronta mostri spaventosi, un drago che sputa fiamme e custodisce un antico tesoro, e intrighi di potere degni dei drammi shakespeariani. "Beowulf" è un gioiello rimasto a lungo inedito e presentato oggi ai lettori da Christopher, il figlio dell'autore, corredato da un ricco apparato di note e commenti e accompagnato dal "Racconto meraviglioso", in cui le vicende dell'eroe seguono la forma e lo stile di un racconto folclorico in antico inglese. In questa edizione troveremo inoltre i commenti dello stesso Tolkien grazie a una selezione accurata delle conferenze che il professore tenne sul tema a Oxford, negli anni Trenta. Ma attenzione: "Beowulf" non è soltanto una "storia di draghi" o il racconto di una caccia al tesoro: è la porta che immette in un tempo antico, sinistro e reale, un'età pagana che si apparenta ai miti di formazione delle prime leggende dell'umanità, là dove l'immaginazione crea vorticose realtà poetiche, specchio del nostro essere di sempre, ieri, oggi e forse domani.
