"Tutta la filosofia occidentale è, in senso effettivo, filosofia greca; ed è vano soffermarsi sul pensiero filosofico se si recidono i legami che ci uniscono ai grandi pensatori del passato? Una narrazione della storia della filosofia può procedere in due modi. La storia può essere puramente espositiva, e indicare che cosa ha detto il tale e come è stato influenzato il tal altro. Oppure l'esposizione può essere integrata, entro certi limiti, da un discorso critico, per mostrare in che modo si sia sviluppata la discussione filosofica. Qui è stato adottato il secondo metodo. Va aggiunto che ciò non deve portare il lettore a credere che un pensatore possa essere liquidato soltanto perché è stato constatato che le sue teorie sono manchevoli. Kant disse una volta che aveva paura non tanto di essere confutato quanto di essere frainteso. Dobbiamo tentare di capire che cosa i filosofi cercano di dire, prima di metterli da parte. Ma bisogna confessare, al tempo stesso, che lo sforzo appare talvolta sproporzionato al risultato che si consegue. In definitiva, è un problema di giudizio che ciascuno deve risolvere da sé... Il nostro fine è stato quello di fornire un panorama di alcune delle principali questioni che i filosofi hanno discusso. Se, scorrendo queste pagine, il lettore si sentirà spinto a studiare l'argomento più di quanto avrebbe fatto altrimenti, lo scopo principale del libro sarà stato raggiunto."
