In una corsia d’ospedale Bacci Pagano sta vegliando Jasmìne Kilamba: è riuscito a stento a liberarla da una gang di sadici assassini e ora la donna sta lottando tra la vita e la morte. Lo avvicina un anziano tedesco di nome Kurt Hessen, arrivato a Genova alla ricerca del fratellastro italiano, del quale sa soltanto che la madre era di Sestri Ponente e si faceva chiamare Nicla... Hessen vuole affidare l’indagine all’investigatore dei carruggi, che d’istinto rifiuta. Ma a convincerlo bastano un assegno molto, troppo generoso e, forse, qualche altro oscuro motivo. Inizia così un viaggio nel passato che riporta Bacci alla Genova del 1944 popolata di soldati tedeschi, fascisti, partigiani e spie, dove i suoi genitori e il nonno Baciccia lavoravano come operai e Nicla serviva alla mensa dell’Ansaldo Fossati. L’immagine della giovane, informatrice della Resistenza infiltrata presso i nazisti, si sovrappone a quella di Jasmìne, prostituta nera fuggita da una terra senza speranza. E anche la città dilaniata dalla guerra, dalla miseria e dalla fame si confonde con la metropoli contemporanea, investita dal vento della globalizzazione.
