Il lettore troverà nella poesia che da il titolo al libro l'idea che ha Bukowski della scrittura e del proprio mestiere. "E così vorresti fare lo scrittore?" La voce dell'autore inaugura il registro rude ed eccessivo, ironico e provocatorio per cui tanti lettori lo amano. Se l'impulso a scrivere non esplode all'interno di te, se non ti viene da mente, cuore, bocca, viscere, se non è come un sole che ti brucia dentro, meglio lasciar perdere. Un vitalismo disincantato e romantico, pragmatico e ribaldo corre per queste pagine. Il lettore vi troverà paesaggi urbani desolati, invettive crudeli ed esilaranti (vedi quella contro Fred Astaire), massime perentorie e sublimi su come può passare utilmente il tempo libero chi non ama il baseball. Il ritmo dei versi è quello di un parlato sincopato, e fa pensare a un pittore che lascia sgocciolare i colori o a un jazzista che soffia a scatti in uno strumento a fiato. Ma poi compaiono all'improvviso forti metafore visionarie: una balena bianca di 70 anni nell'acqua lattescente di una jacuzzi, la vecchia macchina da scrivere elettrica che, abbandonata per l'arrivo del computer, risuscita come un Lazzaro meccanico al primo guasto di quello. Alla fine di un libro così magmatico, di un autore che appartiene alla famiglia vagabonda dei Cendrars e dei Miller, al lettore resterà la felice impressione che "la vita è piena di gioiosi / miracoli".

Bukowski is one of the most recognizable names in contemporary American poetry, probably so popular because his poems are so easy to read. He uses strong, simple language, raw pessimistic tone and blunt honesty to describe everything from feeding his cats to the state of morality in modern America.
"Why do we embroider everything we say With special emphasis When all we really need to do Is simply say what Needs to be said?" This is one of the reasons why I enjoyed reading Bukowski's poetry.
