Considerato il manifesto, o meglio, la bibbia del decadentismo, il romanzo segue le vicende del protagonista, Jean Floressas des Esseintes, impegnato a sconfiggere la Natura attraverso l'Artificio. La figura di des Esseintes, a sua volta modellata su quella reale del conte Robert de Montesquiou, divenne il prototipo di tutti gli esteti e i dandy di fine secolo. Romanzo atipico, con un solo personaggio, privo di dialogo e delle tradizionali soluzioni narrative, "Controcorrente" si dispiega in un universo di eccentricità, stravaganze, follie, inquietudini, deliri, descritto con un linguaggio prezioso, sfolgorante di inusuali metafore; una scrittura nella quale ogni singola parola, scelta con l'accuratezza e l'amore per la rarità tipici del collezionista, scintilla e luccica, in una perfetta corrispondenza tra lingua e personaggio. Con uno scritto di Guy de Maupassant e uno scritto di Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly.
