"I Dialoghi sulla religione naturale" sono l'opera più audace di David Hume. l tema è chiaramente enunciato sin dalle prime battute: può la credenza religiosa essere razionale? Nel corso del dialogo la domanda si precisa: si può ragionevolmente inferire dalla conoscenza sperimentale dell'uomo e dell'universo la credenza nell'esistenza di un Dio infinitamente perfetto, come la religione "naturale" lo descrive? Il mondo obbedisce a un disegno dettato da una causa intelligente? Hume esplora tutte le possibili risposte, ma a causa della limitatezza della ragione umana la soluzione rimane avvolta dai dubbi. Il dialogo tra i diversi personaggi (un teista, uno scettico e un mistico) delinea un originale teatro delle idee in cui si confrontano, con veri e propri colpi di scena, le posizioni più avanzate dell'Illuminismo europeo. L'introduzione e il commento di Gianni Paganini trattano le questioni più complesse legate alla struttura del dialogo, alla sua problematica conclusione e al pensiero del filosofo.
