Sul fronte francese, nel 1918, l’ultimo anno della prima guerra mondiale, il ventitreenne Ernst Jünger è tenente nella compagnia assegnata al «Boschetto 125». In trincea, infilato nel tascapane, ha sempre con sé uno di quegli esili quadernetti sui quali annota i propri appunti: la scrittura accompagna costantemente l’esperienza in campo. In seguito l’autore riprenderà questo diario di guerra per farne un racconto: Boschetto 125. Il giovane ufficiale, che verrà decorato con la croce «pour le mérite», massima onorificenza militare tedesca, narra episodi di combattimento e vita di trincea, descrive la campagna francese sul confine tra Piccardia e Artois attraversata dai reticolati, i villaggi distrutti e abbandonati, i giardini inselvatichiti; dipinge i volti dei combattenti come le figure di un quadro di Bruegel. Snodo decisivo del racconto è lo scontro per la difesa del boschetto, che sarà alla fine conquistato dagli inglesi. È la storia di una sconfitta, dunque. Ma, con ancora nelle orecchie i fischi degli spari, Jünger commenta la perdita del boschetto come un episodio irrilevante sul cui «terribile sfondo si erge il combattente, uomo semplice senza nome; su di lui poggiano il peso e il destino del mondo».

I'll admit right off the bat I am a "Storm of Steel" guy. I read it first and was sucked right in. I picked this book up thinking it would prove more of the same but was quite mistaken. Molto bello, perso sul treno, e ricomprato subito per continuare a leggerlo. Un "Nelle Tempeste di Acciaio" in piccolo. Appassionante. Se qualcuno si volesse avvicinare a Junger, da leggere prima del classico "Nelle..." per testare il genere, di cui racchiude tutti gli elementi.
