Sinossi
All'inaugurazione di un asilo, fatto costruire da Elena Alving, intervengono il figlio Osvaldo, reduce da Parigi e il pastore Manders, amato da Elena. Le lodi che Osvaldo fa della vita parigina scandalizzano il pastore, non Elena che ha sempre nascosto al figlio il suo matrimonio fallito e la dissolutezza del padre. Osvaldo è minato da una malattia trasmessagli dal padre che può portarlo alla pazzia. L'amore di Regina potrebbe salvarlo, ma la madre gli rivela che la ragazza è sua sorella. Regina abbandona la casa e la pazzia di Osvaldo esplode in tutta la sua violenza.
