Sette racconti, sette stanze, e non solo da letto, perché Arlene Heyman, psicanalista newyorkese qui al suo primo libro, si cimenta in una narrazione veritiera e complessa, talora sgradevole, vissuta e voyeuristica insieme, raccontandoci storie di corpi desideranti al di là dell'età, degli anni, della malattia. Corpi vecchi, «ogni ruga in evidenza, come in un quadro di Lucian Freud», che l'autrice rende protagonisti dentro la loro età, e giovani corpi attraenti, «minigonna arancione, morbida camicetta in tinta, niente reggiseno». Corpi che si trovano o si perdono, come in "Gli amori della sua vita". Corpi sottratti a se stessi dal deterioramento, come in "Happy Isles" e "Ballando con Matt". Corpi che si ribellano all'età e all'usura sfidando le convenzioni e provocando in chi legge una molteplicità di sentimenti: spavento, imbarazzo, intesa. Ci si sente messi in scacco, e costretti a stare al gioco, perché non è dato, leggendo, di far finta di nulla. Non sono spettri quelli che si aggirano in queste pagine, bensì donne e uomini in carne e ossa, toccati dalla vita e per questo toccanti. Heyman raccoglie in questi racconti, scritti in un lungo arco di tempo, la propria esperienza umana, elaborando materiale biografico e onirico, verbalizzando il non detto, gli slanci e i conflitti delle relazioni umane. Esplora la zona grigia dei rapporti amorosi, ne indaga i rimpianti e lo sconcerto.

This is definitely the year I discover how good short stories can be. Scary Old Sex is another great collection. There are seven stories in the collection.
