Nato nel piccolo borgo di Dardilly nel 1786 da una famiglia contadina, Giovanni Maria Vianney riuscì ad entrare nel seminario di Lione nel 1813. Alla scarsa attitudine allo studio faceva da contrappeso la sua profonda devozione, e fu così ordinato sacerdote nel 1815; tre anni dopo fu nominato curato del piccolo villaggio di Ars-en-Dombes, non lontano da Lione. Iniziò così una intensa attività di predicazione, in cui attaccava violentemente tutte le manifestazioni di immoralità. Egli era poi particolarmente noto per la sua abilità nel leggere nel cuore di coloro che si confessavano con lui, e gli furono attribuiti poteri di divinazione e miracoli, tanto che presto la sua chiesa divenne meta di numerosissimi devoti. Attraverso la puntuale ricostruzione effettuata da Trochu è possibile ripercorrere le tappe di un cammino esistenziale apparentemente comune, e che tuttavia già verso la sua conclusione veniva colto come modello di perfezione cristiana ed espressione di santità. Nel corso della sua vita, che si concluse ad Ars nel 1859, don Vianney rifiutò sistematicamente ogni riconoscimento; la sua canonizzazione fu decretata nel 1925 da Pio XI, che nel 1929 lo dichiarò poi santo patrono di tutti i parroci.

Probably one of my favorite books that I've read on a Saint. Everyone who wants an idea of what sanctity looks like, should read this book. It will give you hope and inspire you to be strong in the faith.

This is an awesome account of the life of the Cure D'Ars. I have been so inspired by his humility and meekness. I love having a book that inspires so much love and piety.
Hagiography (the lives of saints) is not my thing, but this book was lent to me by a French friend, to whom it was very important, and I persevered with it out of respect for him.
