Ne «Le bostoniane», ovvero "Le donne di Boston", ovvero "The Bostonians", come recita il titolo originale, Henry James racconta quel particolare momento della storia americana che segue la fine della Guerra di secessione (1861-1865) e segna la nascita degli Stati Uniti. È il momento in cui si confrontano, ma potremmo anche dire "in cui vengono in contatto e a conoscenza", gli Stati del Nord, aperti all'influenza dell'Inghilterra e dell'Europa, e alle ideologie e alle culture liberali, con gli Stati del Sud, ben stretti attorno ai loro interessi economici agrari, ancora fondati sulla schiavitù e l'oppressione. Protagonista (o filo conduttore del racconto) è Basil Ransom, affascinante giovanotto del Mississippi, che è tra i primi "sudisti" a tentare l'avventura nella ricca e promettente New York (solo quattro ore da Boston, che ne è quasi una dépendance). La vicenda si sviluppa attorno alla passione che coglie Ransom per la bella e giovanissima Verena, figlia di un guaritore mesmerico, che egli riuscirà, sì, a sposare ma non senza una durissima lotta con la ricca e bellissima Olive Chancellor, che la ama senza veli di sorta, di un amore sul quale Henry James stende un discretissimo velo di silenzio.
