Oskar, un newyorkese di nove anni a suo modo geniale, ama inventare singolari dispositivi. Inventa camicie di becchime per farsi trasportare in volo dagli uccelli in caso di emergenza, inventa un sistema di tubi collegato ai cuscini di tutti i letti di New York per raccogliere le lacrime di chi piange prima di dormire, riversarle nel laghetto del Central Park e mostrare ogni giorno il livello di sofferenza della sua città. A Oskar capita di piangere sul cuscino, da quando suo padre, complice di tanti giochi e invenzioni, è morto nell'attacco alle Torri Gemelle.
Un giorno, non troppo per caso, in un vaso azzurro trovato nell'armadio del padre scopre una busta che contiene una chiave. Sul retro della busta c'è una scritta: «Black». Che serratura apre quella chiave? E se Black è un nome, chi è Black? Per scoprirlo Oskar intende bussare alla porta di tutti i Mr e Mrs Black della città: forse uno di loro sa qualcosa, conosce un segreto che può farlo sentire più vicino al padre. E se il suo viaggio per i distretti di New York non gli riporterà chi se n'è andato per sempre, forse gli recherà altri doni, di certo gli restituirà inaspettatamente un passato lontano che ha sconvolto la vita dei suoi nonni paterni e di un'intera generazione: il passato dell'Europa devastata dalla seconda guerra mondiale.
A quasi quattro anni dall'attacco al World Trade Center, uno degli scrittori americani più giovani e promettenti ci offre il suo romanzo dell'11 settembre. La vicenda di questo ragazzino eccezionale e della sua famiglia farà sorridere, piangere, ridere,riflettere. Farà sentire ogni lettore parte di un dolore che va molto al di là della tragedia di Manhattan: è il dolore di tutte le vittime civili dei conflitti, di tutte le città attaccate, di tutti gli amanti che la guerra ha separato per sempre.
