Le scienze naturali, la zoologia, l'astronomia, la letteratura diventano punti di partenza per una serie di riuscite divagazioni, di "invasioni di campo, incursioni nei mestieri altrui, bracconaggi in distretti di caccia riservata", che arricchiscono in maniera sorprendente la fisionomia dello scrittore. Levi conosce a fondo le cose di cui parla, rivelandosi il più estroso dei botanici, degli zoologi e dei linguisti. Inoltre racconta gli autori che gli sono cari, ci spiega perché scrive, evoca ricordi di giovinezza nostalgici e ironici, riflette sui legami tra il mondo della natura e quello della cultura.
