Scritto all'età di ventotto anni, "L'io diviso", originariamente concepito come il primo di una serie di studi di psicologia e di psichiatria esistenziale che non avrebbe in realtà avuto seguito, rimane, oltre che la più nota, l'opera più originale, profonda ed equilibrata di Ronald Laing. L'analisi della lacerazione interiore che caratterizza l'io diviso dello schizofrenico si colloca a buon diritto tra le pagine esemplari della tradizione fenomenologico-esistenziale in psichiatria, facendo dell'Io diviso, al di là del contesto storico e politico in cui è nato e si è diffuso, un vero e proprio classico del pensiero psichiatrico. Nella sua opera d'esordio, infatti, il giovane psichiatra scozzese riesce a dire qualcosa di accessibile e comprensibile sull'incomprensibilità schizofrenica, portando il mondo della psicosi a contatto con emozioni e stati mentali nei quali è possibile riconoscersi. Tramite il ricorso a un linguaggio vicino all'esperienza, le pagine di Laing non lasciano nella mente del lettore la rappresentazione di un mondo inerte, congelato dalla follia, ma piuttosto quella di un mondo in evoluzione nel quale la psicosi schizofrenica rappresenta una possibile, ma non necessaria, evoluzione del rapporto che un individuo ontologicamente insicuro è riuscito a stabilire con se stesso.
