Il 25 dicembre 1920 J.R.R. Tolkien cominciò ad inviare ai propri figli lettere firmate Babbo Natale. Infilate in buste bianche di neve, ornate di disegni, affrancate con francobolli delle Poste Polari e contenenti narrazioni illustrate e poesie, esse continuarono ad arrivare a casa Tolkien per oltre trent'anni, portate dal postino o da altri misteriosi ambasciatori. Una scelta di questi messaggi annuali, trascritti a volte in forma di colorati logogrifi, formano questa fiaba intitolata "Le lettere di Natale", scritta a puntate da un Tolkien non tanto in vena di paterna e didattica allegria, quanto in groppa all'ippogrifo della sua fantasia filologica e ironica.
