pieno inverno e nel Sud Dakota fa freddo. Molto freddo. Un pullman di anziani in gita verso il monte Rushmore ospita uno strano viaggiatore. Seduto in un sedile in fondo c'è infatti Jack Reacher, che nel suo continuo peregrinare per gli Stati Uniti questa volta ha scelto questo mezzo di trasporto. Quando un incidente obbliga il pullman a una sosta forzata nella sperduta cittadina di Bolton, lo strano passeggero intuisce subito che c'è qualcosa che non va. La cittadina sembra sotto assedio, la polizia locale è in allerta, in servizio 24 ore su 24. Certo, vicino a Bolton c'è un penitenziario federale che, se ha garantito alla cittadinanza un certo benessere, ha portato anche parecchi problemi, non ultimo quello che si cerca ora di fronteggiare. Tra 61 ore infatti si terrà il processo per detenzione e spaccio di droga di un membro di una banda di motociclisti accampata a qualche chilometro dalla città, presumibilmente impegnata a raffinare e distribuire droga. La testimone a carico è un'anziana bibliotecaria, che rifuta di abbandonare la sua casa e nascondersi e che quindi va protetta... Ma una rivolta scoppiata nel carcere ha impegnato tutte le forze di polizia e la donna rischia molto. E poi sono tante le domande che affollano la mente di Reacher: perché la polizia non fa irruzione nell'accampamento dei motociclisti e li arresta tutti?...
