Leah Eady è abituata alle assenze del marito. Ogni volta che lavora a un nuovo romanzo, Robert scompare per qualche tempo, lasciando una nota con scritto: Torno presto. Stavolta, però, al posto del solito biglietto, Leah trova la prenotazione di un volo per Parigi a nome suo e delle figlie. Possibile che Robert voglia essere raggiunto? Eppure, arrivate in Francia, non c'è il marito ad accoglierle, bensì il suo manoscritto, incompiuto, che racconta di una famiglia americana che si trasferisce a Parigi. Seguendo gli indizi disseminati nel testo, Leah s'imbatte in una graziosa libreria del Marais, vicino alla Senna, con la facciata dipinta di rosso e una proprietaria che non vede l'ora di cedere l'attività. Quasi senza rendersene conto, Leah acquista il negozio e le centinaia di volumi stipati sugli scaffali, nella speranza che, in una di quelle storie, si celi un tassello del puzzle che la riporterà da Robert. Più passano le settimane, però, più Leah si sente rinascere: rispetto all'esistenza grigia che conduceva a Milwaukee, la vita parigina è un caleidoscopio di colori. E, tra le chiacchiere coi simpatici clienti della libreria e la magia dei libri che lei divora avidamente, Leah si rende conto che, con o senza Robert, è giunto il momento di prendere in mano la sua vita, e che tocca a lei scegliere il finale del manoscritto incompiuto da cui tutto ha avuto inizio.
