Lydia è una ragazza schiva e introversa. Ama nascondersi fra i suoi adorati libri e fra gli scaffali della Libreria delle Grandi Idee presso cui lavora, nel cuore di Denver, Colorado. Una libreria che, in particolare nelle ore di apertura serali, si popola di bizzarri bibliomani che fra i volumi passano lunghe ore.
Una sera, poco dopo la chiusura, a Lydia tocca una sconcertante, terribile sorpresa. Uno degli abituali frequentatori, il giovane Joey, si è impiccato fra gli scaffali del piano superiore. Prestandogli i primi soccorsi, Lydia fa una scoperta che cambierà la sua esistenza: dalla tasca dei jeans di Joey spunta una foto. Una foto che ritrae lei da bambina.
Perché Joey si è suicidato proprio in libreria? Per quale motivo teneva in tasca quella foto? E perché Lydia ha l’impressione che sia solo il primo di una serie di messaggi che Joey le ha lasciato prima di morire, affidandoli ai libri?
Nel tentativo di scoprire la verità, Lydia rievoca immagini di una terribile notte della sua infanzia, dettagli sepolti da tempo nella memoria. E insieme ai ricordi riemergono presenze che pensava di aver lasciato ormai nel passato, come quella di suo padre.
