"Nexus", la terza parte della Crocifissione in rosa, termina con la partenza di Henry Miller per Parigi: "Parigi 1928" è la cronaca di quel viaggio a lungo sognato dell'autore americano: la Parigi degli anni folli, dove non solo è possibile inebriarsi della nuova cultura degli intellettuali francesi a lungo ammirati dal grande scrittore americano, Cocteau, Soutine, Ernst, Tzara, Aragon, Cendrars, Varèse, ma anche dove ricongiungersi ai grandi espatriati americani, prima di tutti Hemingway e Fitzgerald, nella ricerca non solo di una cultura più innovativa e più libera, ma anche di un ambiente e di una vita completamente diversa dal puritanesimo della madre patria. D'altronde, è difficile immaginare una città che più corrisponda alle attese di Henry Miller che, dopo questo primo viaggio con la moglie June (nel romanzo chiamata Mona), vi si stabilirà definitivamente, senza June, fino alla scoppio della guerra e dove pubblicherà "Tropico del Cancro", "Tropico del Capricorno" e "Primavera nera", che per il loro contenuto erotico saranno introdotti negli Stati Unito solo clandestinamente. Come sempre in Miller, anche in "Parigi 1928" è difficile segnare il confine tra diario e romanzo, tra cronaca e invenzione, e la narrazione procede secondo lo stile pirotecnico di Miller, nel quale fatti quotidiani, osservazioni fulminanti, incontri stupefacenti e, naturalmente, eros si fondono in uno stile che sta alla base della nuova letteratura del Novecento.

DNF at 1:20 of 3:32 hour audiobook The Initial arrival in Paris was engaging and interestingly conversational, but didn't hold my interest as it went along. I may pick it up another time but too many other things to listen to that interest me so may not.
As with all books by Henry Miller, they are all 5-star. I devoured this the way I devoured all of his books. I swear reading Henry Miller, he is right there across the table from me sharing good conversation. All the romance of the city pushed to the side exposing gratuitous fleshy philanderings of what feels like a sleazy drunk uncle.
I haven't read Miller since college, but this newly published edition brought his Paris back in full force. Not only is his and his wife June's time in Paris fascinating, but their travels through "le midi", Vienna, Budapest and in Romania are starkly revealing of place and era. I hadn't read Henry Miller for more than a decade. The Rosy Crucifixion was probably my favorite work of his and this shook me enough to read Paris 1928. I really enjoyed the part set in Paris and the travel around Europe.
Miller said in an interview that if he could go back he would write the shortest books, leaving out many of the passages that as an older man he no longer thought were important.
