Il Bushido, letteralmente "la via del guerriero", è il codice etico che i cavalieri dell'esercito giapponese dovevano osservare tanto nell'esercizio della loro professione quanto nella vita privata. Individua alcune virtù cardine del popolo giapponese (e in particolare dei samurai) come la rettitudine, il coraggio, la benevolenza, l'empatia, la cortesia, la sincerità, l'onore, la fedeltà e l'autocontrollo. Non è il frutto del lavoro di una sola mente, ma una "raccolta" di precetti della casta militare del paese trasmesse oralmente e successivamente fissata su carta. Tutto questo viene magistralmente divulgato ad un pubblico straniero da Inazo Nitobe, un giapponese che aveva avuto molti contatti con l'Occidente e che visse anche in Germania e Stati Uniti. "Bushido, l'anima del Giappone" è ormai considerato un classico, un punto di riferimento per spiegare il Giappone al resto del mondo.

Although I was expecting this to be a book on the basic principles of bushido, it was not what I expected, but still turned out to be worth my time. What an interesting little book! As many of my Goodreads friends know, I have a keen interest in Japan, although I've never really read into its' history or the philosophical foundations on which it developed, at least to be what it was prior to significant Western influence. I recommend this book to all who want to understand the character of the Japanese people. The author was the best known author in the west in his time. He melds the phylosophies of the east with the phylosophies of the west going back to the Romans and the Greeks. Enjoy and Be Blessed. Diamond
