Il vecchio Maggiore ha fatto un sogno che cambierà la vita di tutti gli animali della fattoria. È un maiale anziano e saggio e annuncia che, per realizzare la sua visione, gli animali dovranno affrontare battaglie e grandi difficoltà, dovranno esser pronti a una vera e propria rivoluzione. Una volta vinta, però, otterranno libertà, uguaglianza, giustizia e benessere. Palla di Neve e Napoleone fanno propri gli ideali dell'Animalismo e conducono gli abitanti della fattoria verso la realizzazione del sogno. Dopo aver cacciato il padrone, gli animali riescono a creare una società diversa e migliore ma, una volta che i sogni si sono realizzati, la realtà può rivelarsi molto diversa da come la si era immaginata all'inizio. I sette Comandamenti che segnavano la via dell'Animalismo diventano improvvisamente soltanto uno: «Tutti gli animali sono uguali, ma alcuni sono più uguali di altri». Pubblicato nel 1945 nel Regno Unito, è la brillante satira della retorica sovietica dell'uguaglianza e nasce dal genio di George Orwell, dalla fusione del suo impegno politico con la sua passione letteraria. Il tema centrale è la denuncia di qualsiasi forma di dominio dell'uomo sull'uomo.
