Di ritorno, a bordo della Surprise, da una spedizione in Sudamerica dall'esito poco felice, Aubrey e Maturin vengono incaricati dal capo dei Servizi d'informazione britannici di svolgere una delicata missione diplomatica nel Mar della Cina, per impedire un'alleanza tra i francesi e i principi malesi.
