L'esile salvagente intorno alla vita tiene a galla Doaa e due bambine, una di pochi mesi, l'altra di nemmeno due anni, a lei affidate dai genitori prima di scomparire per sempre nelle acque, come altre centinaia di persone. Doaa ha paura, lei ha sempre odiato l'acqua, sin da piccola, e solo la guerra e la disperazione che l'accompagna l'hanno convinta a lasciare la sua famiglia e la sua casa in Siria e mettersi su quel barcone. Aveva tanti ricordi felici e tanti sogni da realizzare, che ora galleggiano intorno a lei insieme ai relitti dell'imbarcazione e ai pochi superstiti dei 500 che si erano messi in viaggio. Erano quasi arrivati, solo poche ore di mare li separavano dall'Italia, risate liberatorie cominciavano a levarsi dal ponte, quando un peschereccio si dirige contro di loro, una, due volte. Per farli affondare. Il barcone non regge e tutti si gettano in acqua. Molti annegano subito. Anche Doaa non sa nuotare e solo il salvagente che le porta il marito la tiene a galla. E lo farà per i successivi quattro giorni, in cui le voci e i lamenti intorno si spengono uno dopo l'altro. La tentazione è di lasciarsi andare, ma le due bambine che si aggrappano a lei reclamano la vita. Per loro deve lottare e resistere un'ora di più, poi un'altra, e cantare, e pregare, fino a quando qualcuno arriva. Solo undici vengono tratti in salvo. Doaa ha diciannove anni, ma la sua vita comincia da quei quattro giorni alla deriva. Perché la prima volta nasci al mondo, ma è quando capisci quanta forza si cela in te, e quanto la speranza può avere la meglio sulle circostanze più tragiche, che nasci a te stesso.

Doaa's story itself is heartbreaking and deserves to be told, there is no doubt about it. But I feel like Fleming was possibly the wrong person to tell it. Im astounded by all the high ratings. A very interesting story, but poorly told. I would probably read another authors rendition of Doaa's story. Frankly, Fleming's sucked. I was hesitant to read this book, but I'm glad I did. Seeing the Syrian conflict and resulting refugee crisis from the perspective of one family and one young woman in particular, made the situation clear and more poignant.
