In una tranquilla cittadina del Kyushu, la giovane Suzume si imbatte in una curiosa porta, che si erige intatta tra le rovine di un edificio fatiscente, come se fosse stata salvata per magia dalla devastazione. La porta non si apre su nulla ma la ragazza sente comunque l'impulso di girarne il pomello e di spalancarla. Di colpo, in seguito al suo gesto, una serie di altre porte altrettanto misteriose, sparse in tutto il Giappone, iniziano ad aprirsi una dopo l'altra... ma dovranno essere richiuse al più presto, o la calamità che si nasconde dall'altra parte sarà libera di abbattersi sul Paese. Seguendo il mistico richiamo delle porte, inizia così per Suzume un incredibile viaggio per chiuderle tutte, come una novella Pandora che tenta di sigillare il proverbiale vaso.

The book had an interesting premise, but it really sagged in the middle. By that point the novelty of the premise has worn off, and the travelog format wasn't strong enough to sustain the story on its own. Che dire, Makoto Shinki è sempre una garanzia. Rispetto al film il romanzo risulta un po’ più lento e meno dinamico, è la traduzione italiana sicuramente non aiuta, purtroppo sì perde molta della poesia presente nella scrittura giapponese.
