Nata in Kenya da famiglia somala fuggita dalla guerra civile, quando aveva appena un anno la sua famiglia si è trasferita a Londra. Il suo primo libro di poesie, del 2011, "Teaching my mother how to give birth" ("Insegnando a mia madre come partorire") colpì l'interesse della cantante e attrice Beyoncé, che le chiese di scrivere alcune poesie per il suo videoclip "Lemonade". "Benedici la figlia cresciuta da una voce nella testa", raccolta di versi degli ultimi dieci anni in cui le poesie di Shire hanno la risonanza dei classici. Ispirata dalla sua vita e dalle sue origini, come anche dalla cultura pop e dall'attualità, Shire canta la dignità, riscattandola, delle vite di immigrati, madri e figlie, donne nere e ragazze adolescenti. E se le sue poesie spesso sono forti, affrontando temi come la nostalgia dei rifugiati, la violenza della guerra e la mutilazione dei genitali femminili, la sua scrittura resta seducente. In versi pieni di dolore e sofferenza, ma anche di grande vitalità, Shire ci parla di cosa vuol dire abitare un corpo di donna, di disturbi dell'alimentazione, di ossessioni compulsive, e tensioni irrisolte con la fede di appartenenza.

Painfully beautiful poems of migration, womanhood, trauma and resilience.
I was extremely excited to see this on NetGalley and it didn’t disappoint. It’s a strong collection of emotional, powerful and raw poetry that is a great continuation of her work.
"Dear Uncle, is everything you love foreign or are you foreign to everything you love?" Some lines in this collection will leave you breathless. WOW
