Chi pensa che le maschere siano solo per le feste di carnevale si sbaglia di grosso. C’è una magia tutta particolare nelle maschere. Nascondono un volto, ma ne rivelano un altro... quello che si vede solo al buio.
La Casa dell'Opera di Ankh-Morpork è il posto giusto per godersi la musica, il teatro e un innocuo Fantasma mascherato che si aggira dietro le quinte. La giovane Agnes Nitt di Lancre, la cui voce è straordinaria quanto la sua stazza, vi si è recata per tentare la carriera di cantante lirica. Peccato che non sia proprio il tipo perfetto per calcare la ribalta… E poi ci sono due streghe che non vedono l'ora di ricondurla alla ragione e farla diventare una loro apprendista: Nonna Weatherwax e Tata Ogg, che si sono recate ad Ankh-Morpork per convincere Agnes che la vita da strega è molto migliore di quella sul palcoscenico. Solo che ora sono tutte e tre coinvolte in un mistero a base di efferati omicidi che implica tizi mascherati e risate da maniaco.
Ma, come dice il detto, lo spettacolo deve continuare, anche se c'è un po' di sangue che imbratta le quinte!
Terry Pratchett miscela sapientemente humour, suspense e satira sul mondo del teatro e dell'arte per dare vita a un mystery divertente, avvincente e originale, che saprà conquistare non solo i lettori appassionati di Mondo Disco, ma anche gli amanti del giallo e dell'opera.

A story where a villain literally dies from being too dramatic. It's generally a good parody on The Phantom of the Opera, but the ending was as confusing and rushed as those operas Pratchett made fun of. Re-Read 9/22/24: Poor Agnes. Such a sweat soul with a sweet voice, smashed to pieces by the inclusion of WITCHES. Well, straight lines and headology and all are all extremely dangerous tools.
