Alla fine del 1937 Tolkien abbandonò con riluttanza il suo lavoro sui miti di Valinor e iniziò Il Signore degli Anelli. La strada perduta e altri scritti è il punto di approdo dei racconti, frammenti, riflessioni sul mondo della Terra di Mezzo prima dell'opera che rese l'autore noto in tutto il mondo.
