Il 20 marzo 1995 in quattro treni della metropolitana di Tokyo viene sparso veleno liquido da una setta religiosa, causando dodici morti e migliaia di intossicati. Questo libro è una ricostruzione degli eventi per mezzo delle testimonianze delle persone coinvolte, ma è anche un viaggio nella coscienza collettiva dei giapponesi. Unica opera non narrativa di Haruki è composta da due parti: la prima presenta le interviste a quaranta vittime dell'attentato (e ai parenti dei morti).
