In natura esiste un fenomeno elettromagnetico che può provocare violenti terremoti, onde anomale, maremoti, eruzioni vulcaniche e variazioni climatiche. Alla massima potenza, è in grado di cancellare ogni forma di vita sulla Terra. Si chiama «slittamento polare». Negli anni ’40 del Novecento qualcuno scoprì il modo di innescare artificialmente tale slittamento: fu il professor Kovacs, uno scienziato ungherese fortunosamente sfuggito ai nazisti – che intendevano rapirlo per utilizzare i suoi studi a scopi bellici – e scomparso poi nel nulla insieme al materiale delle sue ricerche. Ma ora qualcuno sembra aver messo le mani sui Teoremi di Kovacs: il leader di un gruppo di sedicenti anarchici no global, che progetta di dare una piccola scossa ammonitrice alle nazioni industrializzate prima di rimettere tutto a posto. Il rischio è altissimo, poiché lo slittamento non è reversibile e la catastrofe sembra inevitabile. A meno che qualcuno non conosca l’antidoto per evitarla… Kurt Austin, Joe Zavala e i compagni della Squadra Missioni Speciali della NUMA hanno già affrontato missioni ad alta tensione, ma mai si sono misurati con una sfida del genere.
