Nelle notti senza tramonto di una Pietroburgo estiva e deserta il cielo luminoso sembra propiziare incontri fatali. Come quello tra un timido sognatore che vaga senza meta fra palazzi e canali, prigioniero delle sue chimere, e una bella e malinconica fanciulla che si strugge di nostalgia per il suo innamorato. Per quattro notti i due sconosciuti mettono a nudo le loro anime e si confidano pene e solitudini. Per quattro notti il giovane sognatore prova a inseguire l’amore, finché l’alba dell’ultimo mattino dissolve ogni illusione lasciandolo solo col suo disincanto. Eppure nulla potrà mai cancellare l’inattesa felicità che quell’incontro gli ha regalato. Pubblicato nel 1848, il «romanzo sentimentale» del giovane Dostoevskij con la sua atmosfera magica ha incantato generazioni di lettori e ispirato maestri del cinema come Luchino Visconti e Robert Bresson.
