Questo libro, la più recente e aggiornata antologia di un autore che è una vera e propria icona mondiale della poesia dal secondo Novecento a oggi, conferma intatta la sua vitalità intellettuale, la sua piena apertura di fronte al mondo, e insieme la capacità davvero unica di cogliere e valorizzare poeticamente gli elementi più disparati del reale e offrirceli sulla pagina. Ma poi precisa, opportunamente, che «il miracolo di questa poesia è l'essere riuscita a pronunciare con la stessa scioltezza numerose allusioni a una complessa tradizione testuale, innanzitutto in lingua inglese». Ciò significa che il grande interprete della beat generation, il poeta che è anche editore - e tra l'altro di Urlo di Ginsberg -, ha innovato sulla consapevole base di un immenso patrimonio culturale, a partire dal quasi coetaneo Dylan Thomas, per comprendere Pound o Yeats, su su fino a Whitman, ma anche a tutta la grande poesia inglese dell'Ottocento. L'insieme è il variegatissimo messaggio (impegno civile, ambientalismo, descrizione del quotidiano, struggente meditazione sui genitori perduti) di un artista che concepisce il mondo, pur nella sofferenza che tutti coinvolge, come un «bellissimo posto / per nascere», un posto dove «il poeta come un acrobata / si arrampica sui versi».

I always liked greatest hits albums, especially when full of new discoveries. I always liked artist retrospectives that enable us to see change over time—the blue phase, the island years, etc. I always liked protest songs that said no to death and yes to life. A book to share and share.
Early stuff swirls and dances around your head, but his later work comes off as slightly trite and overly complicated.

Most of the poems in this collection have great lines, but not so much on the poem as whole. Nonetheless, there were bangers such as New York-Albany; Underwear; Recipe for Happiness in Khabarovsk or Anyplace; Jack of Hearts; “Driving a cardboard automobile”; The Lord’s Last Prayer.
Although I'm a declared not fan of beat poetry, I wanted to read some more of Ferlinghetti's poetry (yet Ferlinghetti did not consider himself to be a Beat poet, as he said in the 2013 documentary Ferlinghetti, Rebirth of Wonder: "Don't call me a Beat, I never was a Beat poet"). I must say I prefer
Don't take him for granted.
