Nell’estate del 1797, il ventunenne Billy Budd viene arruolato a forza su una nave della marina militare inglese. È bello e ignaro del male quanto basta per venire in odio al maestro d’armi Claggart, individuo perfido e maniaco della disciplina, che fa di tutto per rendere la vita impossibile al marinaio. Il pugno omicida con cui il giovane reagisce alla falsa accusa di insubordinazione conduce la storia al suo tragico epilogo. Diviso tra ansia di giustizia e rispetto della legge, l’integerrimo capitano Vere assolve moralmente il marinaio ma è costretto a condannarlo: verrà impiccato al pennone di maestra, come un Cristo immolato sulla croce. Il racconto di Melville, scritto poco prima della morte e pubblicato nel 1924, commuove come una favola triste ma ha la solennità della parabola; ci rivela che un uomo può odiare senza ragione un proprio simile fino a distruggerlo, un innocente può essere ucciso «secondo giustizia» e un giusto può riconoscere l’innocenza e insieme annientarla: un intreccio orribile e assurdo che per Melville assomiglia molto alla vita.
