È passato più di un secolo dagli avvenimenti descritti nel "Ciclo degli eredi di Shannara", e la guerra tra gli Elfi e la Federazione continua ancora minacciando l'esistenza stessa del mondo di Shannara. Il presente ciclo ruota intorno alla missione, irta di sconosciuti pericoli e insidiata da nemici temibili, dell'ultimo druido di Paranor, Walker Boh, alla ricerca di tesori dal valore inestimabile: le Pietre Magiche, scomparse da decenni, e una potentissima "magia fatta di parole", in grado di cambiare per sempre chi la possiede e che potrà forse porre fine al secolare conflitto. Trent'anni prima, il principe degli Elfi Kael Elessedil era partito per impadronirsi della leggendaria magia e non aveva mai più fatto ritorno, benché avesse con sé le Pietre Magiche che fino a quel momento avevano sempre protetto i membri della famiglia reale. Quando ormai si è rinunciato a cercarlo, Kael viene ritrovato morente nel mare dello Spartiacque. Unica testimonianza delle traversie da lui vissute nei trent'anni precedenti è una mappa coperta di simboli misteriosi che porta ancora con sé. E Walker è il solo uomo vivente in grado di leggerli. Seguendo le indicazioni della mappa, gli Elfi organizzano una spedizione capitanata dal druido, che però è ostacolata dagli agguati di chi vorrebbe distruggere il regno degli Elfi: la terribile Strega di Ilse e il suo misterioso maestro, Morgawr, mezzo uomo e mezzo rettile, che si nutre di anime e comanda un esercito di morti viventi praticamente impossibili da fermare.

The "Great Shanarra Re-Read" continues, albeit at a much slower pace than I anticipated. In this case, I generally agree with most of the reviews, and the overall ratings for this trilogy. This is my favorite of all the Shannara series, focusing for the first and only time on a land which isn't Shannara. The series features Walker Boh the last druid who is still trying to form a council of druids. He receives a message from the elves that a past expedition has returned with some news
I really liked this particular Shannara trilogy. Instead of having the story based in the actual Shannara continent, the characters - who were all very memorable - embarked on this crazy journey across the sea in an airship. I consider Brooks’ Sword series and his Heritage series as “classic” Shannara. A long book deserves a long review. This one had to wait until I went on holiday because it is far too large to take on the train. I will reflect on the size first, reading these combined editions is always a bit of a challenge but I am glad I did with these. More so than the original trilogy (or 4) Leggi tutto
