"Loro" sono i coniugi Maj Sjöwall e Per Wahlöö che in dieci anni, dal 1965 al 1975, hanno composto il "Decalogo dell'Ispettore Martin Beck", ovvero i dieci romanzi, uno per anno con le inchieste della squadra omicidi di Stoccolma. In Beck c'è assai poco della maniera maigrettiana, o di qualunque maniera, e del metodo-non metodico del commissario di Simenon. E non perché Beck non abbia una personalità, o perché il lettore non sia portato a simpatizzare con lui ma perché al contrario possiede una personalità variegata, cangiante col tempo, fatta di io diversi, come lo sono le personalità vere. In questo romanzo, una Stoccolma "calda", dove la polizia è impegnata ad arginare le proteste antiamericane per la guerra in Vietnam è sconvolta da una strage: i nove passeggeri di un autobus vengono uccisi a colpi di mitra. Tra le vittime c'è anche un sovrintendente che è il più giovane collaboratore di Martin Beck. Il poliziotto è rimasto coinvolto casualmente o era proprio lui nel mirino del folle omicida? Di quale caso si stava occupando? Cosa ci faceva su quell'autobus visto che non risultava in servizio? Sembra che nessuno dei colleghi o dei familiari sappia rispondere a questi interrogativi.
