Un viaggio all’insegna dei ritmi della natura, in un luogo in cui tutto sembra essersi fermato e dove inventiva e improvvisazione sono necessarie per la sopravvivenza. Per conto di un’azienda di legname, l’autore alla fine degli anni Quaranta del secolo scorso parte a bordo di una canoa, diretto verso la vasta foresta dell’Ontario settentrionale con l’obiettivo di scoprire terreni favorevoli per gli affari. Il racconto che ne consegue immerge il lettore in un’atmosfera ormai lontana, alla quale Rowlands non riuscirà più a rinunciare. Tra spirito avventuroso e filosofia, l’autore esprime lo stupore di vivere le stagioni di un anno intero lontano dalla civiltà. Un senso di meraviglia oggi quasi non più accessibile, se non in quello che l’autore rinomina Cache Lake, il lago perfetto. Ma è pur vero che esiste un Cache Lake per ognuno di noi, e che non può essere trovato lungo un’autostrada a quattro corsie, né è segnalato da cartelli. Se varrà la pena di cercarlo, sarà nascosto al rumore della civiltà, in un luogo tranquillo e sereno. E sarebbe un peccato oltrepassarlo senza riuscire a vederlo.

For anyone who wants to learn survival skills in the wilderness, I’d rate this book as a five star classic. It is definitely a niche book but if you’re into wilderness survival I can’t imagine another so full of story and technique.
I picked up this book chuckling at the quote on the cover, "the best book ever written," but was immediately excited about the beautiful and insightful illustrations in the margins of every page.
