Nessuno per strada, negozi vuoti, il pub deserto… Non che ci si aspetti chissà quale frenetica attività a Stoyre, un paesino di casupole bianche lungo la costa scozzese, ma a Hamish, arrivato lì per un controllo di routine, quel silenzio inquieta non poco. E l’inquietudine aumenta quando scopre che tutti gli abitanti si sono radunati in chiesa e ascoltano, rapiti, le prediche di un pastore arrivato da poco nel villaggio.
Hamish non può nemmeno sospettare che quello sarà solo il primo di una serie di avvenimenti che sconvolgeranno la tranquillità delle Highlands e metteranno a dura prova il suo intuito di poliziotto, nonché il suo equilibrio mentale: tra apparizioni spettrali e rapimenti, tra delitti ed esplosioni, tra una banda in caccia di tesori nazisti e un gruppo di vecchiette agguerrite, le difficoltà (e le stranezze) sembrano non aver fine.
Come sempre, Hamish è determinato a risolvere questi misteri, anche se rischia ciò che teme di più: attirare l’attenzione e l’ammirazione dei suoi superiori, e quindi essere trasferito chissà dove, lontano dalla sua amatissima Lochdubh…

I watched and enjoyed the Hamish Macbeth TV series a few years ago, and I've been meaning to read some of the books M. C. Beaton wrote about the character.
