Comparso in due puntate sulla «Revue de Paris» (1830), prestigiosa rivista letteraria di respiro internazionale, Sarrasine è uno dei testi balzachiani più enigmatici e aperti a diverse interpretazioni. In bilico tra elementi realistici, la Roma stendhaliana nella quale è in parte ambientato, ed elementi fantastici, ispirati alla letteratura tedesca e all’esempio di E.T.A. Hoffmann, il racconto sviluppa con chiarezza il tema della meditazione sull’arte, specialmente sul paragone tra le arti. «Alla stabilità e ai limiti della scultura – spiega Lanfranco Binni nella sua introduzione – si contrappongono la libertà e l’universalità della musica, che riunisce in sé tutti i generi e simboleggia, forse, la ricerca di quel capolavoro, infinito e androgino, che Sarrasine ha inutilmente cercato di raggiungere».
