Parlare – l’avevano già detto Wittgenstein e Austin – è essenzialmente un modo di agire: allora l’unità fondamentale nello studio del linguaggio sono gli atti che si compiono parlando, gli atti linguistici. Ma quali sono le regole caratteristiche di questa forma di comportamento? Ed è possibile esplicitarle in modo sistematico? Dare una risposta affermativa e dimostrarla significa che, contro ogni apparenza, lo studio degli atti linguistici appartiene alla langue e non alla parole. L’impresa è possibile partendo dall’atto linguistico per eccellenza, l’illocuzione, cioè l’azione che si compie «nel» dire qualcosa, ad esempio facendo una promessa. Per Searle – che non ama i confini delle discipline – la filosofia del linguaggio è, in definitiva, un ramo della filosofia della conoscenza: deve studiare il problema dei rapporti tra mente e corpo, il problema del rapporto che intercorre tra le parole e la realtà.

As with most things, I started out entirely confused about what, exactly, Searle was even saying.
