Un colto e curioso dignitario arabo, Ibn Fadlan, viene inviato in missione diplomatica dal suo califfo nella terra dei normanni. Siamo nel 922 dopo Cristo, e Ibn Fadlan annota nel suo diario di viaggio ciò di cui è testimone. Incontra numerosi gruppi di «barbari», che curano molto meno l’igiene di quanto non facciano con il cibo, l’alcol e il sesso. Assiste ai loro riti, alla violenza delle loro cerimonie, alle orge. Quello di Fadlan con l’Europa dell’epoca è un incontro scioccante, per lui che viene dal mondo sofisticato ed evoluto di Baghdad, la «Città della pace». I read this back in the mid to late 90s as one of the first books of Michael Crichton's. I read it before the movie came out. I remember ripping through this story, it was great.
