liked the beginning, thought the end was unbelievably anticlimatic.

The writing was drier than a cracker in the desert... But I loved the book anyway! It definitely reads like a scientific/army report but this was such an interesting twist on the classic sci-fi (first contact?). There's a good story in here, somewhere. If Crichton tackled this idea later in his career it would have undoubtedly been a great book. There's just far too much science and not enough thriller.
