Nel suo costante e attento interrogarsi sui fenomeni collettivi che hanno caratterizzato il Novecento cosi ricco di fermenti innovativi e di radicali rivolgimenti, Jung non mancò di portare la propria testimonianza di analista. Nel disagio della «civiltà in transizione» egli scorse un riflesso e un’amplificazione del malessere psichico dell’uomo moderno, divenuto preda di un razionalismo esasperato e sostanzialmente sterile, in nome del quale tenta di tacitare le sue radici più profonde che lo mettono in sintonia con la natura e con gli altri esseri viventi. Relegando nell’inconscio le sue componenti irrazionali ed emotive l’uomo contemporaneo lavora alla propria infelicità, perché accresce a dismisura il loro potere rendendole incontrollabili e distruttive, anziché lasciarsene gradatamente trasformare. Negli scritti del periodo fra le due guerre (dal 1918 al 1939) Jung si sofferma sui fenomeni più salienti di tale momento storico: dai primi segnali dell’emancipazione della donna o dell’evoluzione dei costumi sessuali, agli eventi luttuosi del primo conflitto mondiale e alla massificazione dell’individuo nelle dittature europee. Conclude questo tomo una sezione dedicata agli interventi di Jung sulla creatività dell’artista, considerato capace di far affiorare nelle sue opere, con grande anticipo sui tempi, i contenuti archetipici di cui la sua epoca difetta. Tra i saggi qui raccolti ricordiamo: Sull’inconscio (1918), La donna in Europa (1927), Il problema psichico dell’uomo moderno (1928-31), Il significato della psicologia per i tempi moderni (1933/34) e Saggi di poesia (1922/32).
