Settembre 1810. Determinato a conquistare il Portogallo, Napoleone manda il proprio esercito oltre la frontiera spagnola. L’ultima cosa che i francesi si aspettano di trovare è un territorio depredato e spoglio: l’esercito britannico, infatti, alleato dei portoghesi, oppone un’ostinata resistenza, mirando a fare terra bruciata per affamare il nemico e, dopo averlo trascinato a ridosso di Lisbona, infliggergli la sconfitta definitiva presso l’inespugnabile linea di difesa di Torres Vedras, ideata dal generale Wellington. Per Richard Sharpe, valoroso capitano della compagnia South Essex, la situazione è più che mai difficile: non solo deve tener testa ai soldati francesi, ma anche guardarsi dalle trame del proprio colonnello, intenzionato a favorire la carriera militare di un ufficiale incompetente, che vanta importanti legami familiari. Il capitano è così obbligato a cedere a quest’ultimo il comando della compagnia in vista dell’imminente battaglia...
