In questo saggio del 1958 Jung si occupa dei sempre più numerosi, all’epoca, avvistamenti di «dischi volanti». Da una rassegna dei dati obiettivi disponibili sul fenomeno e dall’analisi delle sue tracce nei sogni e nelle opere degli artisti, conclude che si tratta di immagini unificatrici prodotte dall’inconscio con una funzione di rassicurazione, di fronte a uno stato di smarrimento collettivo negli anni del dopoguerra. Ma non esclude l’ipotesi – suffragata dalla sua teoria della sincronicità – della percezione di realtà fisiche concrete non ancora dimostrabili con strumenti scientifici.
Qualche anno prima aveva affermato: «Studiando l’inconscio ci si imbatte nelle cose più straordinarie, dalle quali i razionalsiti distolgono con l’orrore lo sguardo per poi sostenere di non aver visto niente. L’irrazionale pienezza della vita mi ha insegnato a non scartare mai nulla, neanche quello che urta contro tutte le nostre teorie […] o che sembra per ora inspiegabile. Le parole che seguono immediatamente, «a nessuna scoperta si può giungere nella certezza, nella sicurezza e nella tranquillità», appaiono oggi, in anni non meno carichi di prospettive inquietanti, un commento estremamente significativo alle vicende delle esplorazioni spaziali: l’invio di apparecchiature su Marte e, in futuro, lo sbarco di esseri umani su questo pianeta possono essere accompagnati sul piano cosciente da sentimenti di esaltazione o anche da perplessità e timori; ma non possono non avere riflessi profondi in chi considera questi fatti anche come eventi soggettivi, dunque di natura simbolica.
